About Blastec Company Limited

Blastec Company Ltd has been in operation since 2001 and is duly registered under the laws of Jamaica. Our clients include the major mining and quarry operations on the island, construction companies, and utility providers among others.

Laurence Neufville, CEO

Laurence Neufville joined the University of Technology as an adjunct lecturer in geo-informatics in 2004 and was subsequently engaged full time in 2007. He currently holds the academic rank of an Associate Professor.


Mr. Neufville has been involved in a broad area of academic service and management including:

  • Programme Director for the Urban and Regional Planning

  • Programme Director MSc. Built Environment programme,

  • Faculty Board member,

  • Chairman Faculty Research committee,

  • Graduate studies Quality Assurance Committees,

  • School of Graduate Studies Research and Entrepreneurship Coordinators Committee

  • Academic Board.

  • Board of Undergraduate Studies

He is currently serving his second three-year stint as Head of the School of Building and Land Management. Prior to joining the staff at the University of Technology, Jamaica he served as the Chief Inspector of Mines with the Mines at the Geology Division of the Ministry of Mining and Energy and the College of Agriculture Science and Education as a lecturer.

Mr. Neufville serves the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency on both the Education and Physical Planning Subcommittees. He was appointed to the Caribbean region’s Technical Working Group to advice on standards for the development of public infrastructure in light of the regions increasing exposure to natural disasters and climate change risk. He has had two engagements as GIS consultant with the Central Housing and Planning Agency in Guyana.

His academic and professional qualifications include:​

  • MSc. Geographical Information Systems and Management from the Manchester Metropolitan University, U.K,

  • Professional Masters in Earth Observation and Environmental Geo-sciences from the International Institute for Aerospace Surveys and Earth Sciences/University of Twente, Netherlands, Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Technology, Jamaica.

  • Diploma in Mining Technology from the University of Lulea, Sweden and; BSc. Geology and Geography, from the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica

  • He has membership in the following organisation and Societies

  • The Jamaican Geographical Society, where he served as president,

  • ​​​The Geological Society of Jamaica

  • ​​​The Jamaica Association of Explosives Engineering Professionals​​​

  • The International Society of Explosives Engineers,

  • ​​​Fellow of the Mining Technology Society,

  • ​​​Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying, and is the current Chairman of the Titchfield High School Board of Governors.

Since 2017 he has been engaged as:

  • Consultant Geologist with the United Nations Development Programme

  • Project Manager for the World Bank/GOJ’s , Jamaica Safe Schools Project and; GIS consultant for the Caribbean Development Bank, advising on the application of Geographical Information Systems to sanitation and planning in Haiti.

  • Team Leader, for CDB/CDEMA Model Safe School Project His research interest is in creating geospatial models for the determination of suitable sites for the location renewable energy facilities, the prediction of bush fires and the development of education and training curricula for disaster management practitioners.

Company Profile

 

Our services have been contracted by nearly all the major mining and quarrying operations in Jamaica.  Additionally, its founder and CEO Laurence Neufville have done extensive work in developing and delivering training courses in geographical Information systems for public sector employees in Guyana.

 

This was funded by the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Inter-American Development Bank, Mine and Quarry Management (ACP-EU/UNDP), GIS and Sanitation in Haiti (Caribbean Development Bank)
